Trauma-Informed Therapy in Red Deer, AB. An Approach Built Around Safety

Not all therapy accounts for what you have been through. Trauma-informed therapy does. Every session is shaped by an understanding of how past experiences affect your present.

Trauma-Informed Therapy in Red Deer, AB. An Approach Built Around Safety

Trauma-informed therapy is not a single technique or a specific type of treatment. It is a way of doing therapy that recognizes how deeply past experiences can shape your present. At Patterson Counselling Services in Red Deer, every session is built on this understanding. Whether you are coming in for anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or something you cannot quite name, our approach always accounts for the possibility that what you are dealing with now may be connected to what you have been through before.

    What Trauma-Informed Therapy Actually Means

You may have seen the term "trauma-informed" on other therapy websites. It has become a buzzword, and not every practice that uses it means the same thing by it. Here is what it means at Patterson Counselling Services.

Trauma-informed therapy starts with the understanding that traumatic experiences change how your brain and nervous system work. They change how you respond to stress, how you connect with other people, how you feel in your own body, and how you make sense of the world. These changes are not character flaws or personal weaknesses. They are your system's way of trying to keep you safe. The problem is that what kept you safe then is often what keeps you stuck now.

A trauma-informed approach means we never push you to talk about things you are not ready for. It means we pay attention to what is happening in your body, not just your thoughts. It means we build safety first, because real therapeutic work cannot happen if you do not feel safe in the room. And it means we understand that healing is not linear. There will be good weeks and hard weeks, and both are part of the process.

This approach matters more than most people realize. Standard therapy that does not account for trauma can sometimes make things worse, pushing too fast, focusing only on thoughts while ignoring what the body is carrying, or using techniques that accidentally activate a trauma response. Trauma-informed therapy avoids those pitfalls.

Psychology Today explains the benefits of trauma-informed therapy, noting that it adopts a strengths-based approach, empowering clients to recognize their own resilience and fostering a positive outlook on healing.

How Trauma-Informed Therapy Works at Our Practice

How Trauma-Informed Therapy Works at Our Practice

Every client at Patterson Counselling Services receives trauma-informed care. It is not a separate service you have to ask for. It is woven into how we work from the first conversation.

In practice, this means we start by building a foundation of safety and trust. The first sessions are about getting to know each other, understanding your history and your goals, and establishing what feels manageable. We do not dive into the hard material on day one. We make sure you have the internal resources and the relational safety to do that work when the time comes.

The therapeutic tools we use are chosen based on what fits your situation. For clients whose struggles are rooted in specific traumatic memories, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) can process those memories rapidly, often in as few as one to six sessions, without requiring you to describe them in graphic detail. For clients who need to build capacity for emotional regulation, we work on nervous system awareness and grounding skills. For clients navigating complex or developmental trauma, we take a phased approach that honours the reality that healing from long-term harm takes time and patience.

Our Registered Psychologist holds an ART Master Practitioner certification and brings specialized training in trauma treatment that goes well beyond what most general therapists offer. That depth of training is what makes the trauma-informed label meaningful here, not just a marketing phrase.
