    About Cheryl

    Hi, I'm Cheryl.

I'm a Registered Psychologist based in Red Deer, Alberta, and I specialize in trauma, PTSD, C-PTSD, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). I am listed in the ART International Practitioner Directory as a Master Practitioner. I've spent my career working with people who are carrying more than they should have to carry alone, and helping them find real relief.

My path to private practice wasn't a straight line. I graduated from the University of Regina with a B.Ed. in Adult Education in 1994, then spent 11 years in Northern Saskatchewan working at Northlands College as an instructor in basic education and a life skills coach. In 2004, I moved to Alberta to train as a marital and family therapist at the Loma Linda University campus in Lacombe. After graduating in 2007 as both a marital and family therapist and psychologist, I worked for Alberta Health Services in Child and Adolescent Psychology in High Prairie. I also worked with the High Prairie School Division as a Behaviour Management Consultant.

In December 2010, my family and I moved to Red Deer, where I worked as a mental health counsellor for the Red Deer Primary Care Network. I started my private practice part-time in 2011, and over the next two years it grew into the full-time practice it is today.

Every role along the way shaped how I work with clients now. Years of teaching, coaching, and working alongside families taught me that healing happens when people feel safe, understood, and never rushed.

When I'm not in session, you'll find me on long evening walks, reading, writing, spending time with my family and friends, knitting, cooking, gardening, or heading to the mountains. I've been married for over 34 years and have three adult daughters and three grandchildren.

Victoria Patterson, Office Manager at Patterson Counselling Services, Red Deer, Alberta

    Meet Victoria Patterson

    Hi, I'm Victoria!

I've been the full-time office manager at Patterson Counselling Services since June 2020. I handle scheduling, intake coordination, and the day-to-day details that keep things running smoothly. If you call or email the practice, I'm likely the first person you'll hear from.

Outside of work, I love to read, go to the gym, work on embroidery projects, watch movies, and spend time with family. When the weather is nice, I enjoy going for walks with my dogs, Sophie and Teddy Bear. Every so often, I take a trip to the Rocky Mountains to enjoy the stunning views around Canmore and Banff.

I recently got engaged and am excited to be getting married in the fall of 2026!

    Meet Sophie, Our Office Dog!

    Hi, I'm Sophie!

I've been part of the team at Patterson Counselling Services since November 2021. I don't come to the office every day, but when I do, I love meeting the people who visit. You'll know I'm around by my curled, wagging tail and calm, friendly hello.

While I'm not a certified therapy dog, I proudly completed advanced dog training in 2023. When I'm not greeting clients, you can usually find me napping or quietly enjoying my favourite beef bully bones. I also love a good long walk.
