Why Calgary Residents Are Looking Beyond City Limits for Therapy

Many Calgarians in Beltline, Kensington, or the deep south communities like Silverado and Cranston have tried therapy and felt like progress was slow. Others have been on waitlists for months. The demand for specialized trauma support in Calgary is high, and the supply of practitioners trained in approaches like ART has not kept pace.
Calgary's corporate culture, energy sector demands, and cost-of-living pressures contribute to high rates of burnout. Adults working downtown, near the Foothills Medical Centre, or out on rotation in the oil sands often push through without seeking help until something breaks.
Working with a psychologist online means you can access specialized care without the downtown commute or the wait. The same individual psychotherapy, trauma-informed therapy, and ART sessions available to in-person clients.
What We Help Calgary Clients With
The practice serves adults dealing with trauma and childhood trauma, PTSD from workplace incidents or interpersonal experiences, complex PTSD from prolonged exposure, anxiety and panic, and depression rooted in grief, loss, or repeated stressful experiences.
Childhood trauma surfacing in adults now living in communities like Bridgeland, Inglewood, or Signal Hill is one of the most common patterns we see. The symptoms may not look like what people expect. They show up as anxiety that will not respond to usual coping strategies, relationships that keep falling apart, or a constant feeling that something is wrong without being able to name it.

How Online Sessions Work

Sessions happen over secure video from wherever you are comfortable. All you need is a private, quiet space with a reliable internet connection. Your psychologist guides the same process used in person. Sessions run approximately 60 minutes.
This format is practical for parents in McKenzie Towne or Tuscany who cannot easily leave the house. It also works well for shift workers, travel-heavy professionals, or anyone in the NE or SE communities where fewer trauma specialists practise.
About the Practice
Patterson Counselling Services is a registered psychology practice based in Red Deer, about 90 minutes north of Calgary on the QEII Highway. The psychologist is licensed with the College of Alberta Psychologists and serves clients across the province. ART is recognized as evidence-based by the Society of Clinical Psychology (APA Division 12).
Some clients from Airdrie, Cochrane, or north Calgary communities like Panorama Hills choose to combine an occasional in-person visit with ongoing online sessions. Most Calgary clients work entirely through video.
Sessions with a Registered Psychologist are covered by most extended health plans. Visit the Fees for Services page for details on coverage and payment options.
Taking the First Step
A free 20-minute phone consultation helps determine if working together feels like the right fit. No pressure, no long intake process at the start.
Many Calgary adults in communities like Altadore, Mount Royal, or Marlborough reach out after years of putting off therapy. You do not need to have everything figured out before booking. That is what the first conversation is for.
