Individual psychotherapy is the most direct path to understanding what is going on beneath the surface. At Patterson Counselling Services in Red Deer, one-on-one psychotherapy means private sessions with a Registered Psychologist who is trained to help you work through whatever you are carrying. This is not about generic advice or surface-level check-ins. It is focused, evidence-based work designed to help you make real changes in how you think, feel, and respond.

When Individual Psychotherapy Is the Right Fit

You might be considering individual psychotherapy because something in your life is not working the way it should. Maybe your emotions feel unpredictable. Maybe your relationships keep hitting the same walls. Maybe you have been functioning well enough on the outside but struggling on the inside for longer than you care to admit.

Individual psychotherapy is a good fit when you want to go deeper than what group support, self-help, or short-term counselling can offer. It is for people who are ready to look honestly at their patterns, their responses, and the experiences that shaped them. You do not need to have a specific diagnosis or a clear idea of what is wrong. Many clients start with the simple awareness that something needs to change.

In Red Deer and central Alberta, it can take a while to get to this point. The culture here tends to reward pushing through. Plenty of our clients spent years managing on their own before deciding they wanted something different. That is not a failure. It is a sign that you are ready for a different approach.

What Individual Psychotherapy Looks Like at Our Practice

What Individual Psychotherapy Looks Like at Our Practice

Sessions are 50 minutes, one on one with a Registered Psychologist. We typically meet weekly, though biweekly sessions are available depending on where you are in the process.

The first few sessions focus on understanding your situation. What brought you in, what you have already tried, what your goals are, and what feels most pressing. This is not a checklist. It is a conversation that helps us build a clear picture of what we are working with and what approach will serve you best.

From there, the work depends on you. Some clients come in with specific things they want to process, a traumatic experience, a pattern they cannot break, an emotional response that keeps hijacking their day. Others come in with a more general sense that something is off and need help identifying what it is. Both are valid starting points.

Because our practice specializes in trauma-informed care, we are trained to notice when current struggles have roots in earlier experiences. If that connection shows up in our work together, we have the tools to address it directly, including Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), which can process difficult memories without requiring you to relive them in detail.

Both in-person sessions at our Red Deer office and secure online sessions are available.

In 2012, the American Psychological Association formally recognized the effectiveness of psychotherapy, noting that it produces lasting changes that go beyond symptom relief.

The National Institute of Mental Health explains that evidence-based psychotherapy can help people change habits that contribute to their difficulties and address self-defeating patterns.
