Stress management therapy goes beyond generic advice about work-life balance. At Patterson Counselling Services, we help you understand why your stress response is stuck in overdrive and provide therapeutic approaches that create real, lasting change. Whether you're dealing with burnout, chronic overwhelm, or stress that's affecting your health and relationships, we can help.
When You Need Stress Management Therapy
Stress management therapy is the right fit when stress has become chronic, affecting your health, sleep, relationships, and ability to enjoy life. Standard self-help strategies like exercise and time management haven't been enough.
Signs that professional support is needed include persistent physical symptoms (headaches, digestive issues, muscle tension), emotional exhaustion, irritability or anger that seems disproportionate, and a sense that you're running on empty no matter what you do.
When chronic stress is connected to past experiences or deep-seated patterns, therapeutic work offers the depth needed to break the cycle. Sometimes what feels like 'just stress' is actually a trauma response in disguise.
The American Psychological Association explains how stress affects the body, noting that chronic stress impacts nearly every system, from the musculoskeletal and respiratory systems to the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

Our Stress Management Process

We start by understanding the full picture, not just what's stressing you out, but why your nervous system may be particularly vulnerable to stress overload.
Treatment may include practical coping strategies, nervous system regulation techniques, and deeper exploration using Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) if past experiences are amplifying your stress response.
Sessions are 50 minutes, typically weekly. Available in-person in Red Deer and online across Alberta.
Psychology Today explains that nervous system regulation and trauma are closely connected, and learning to regulate the nervous system is one of the most important tools for recovery from chronic stress.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stress Management
What's the difference between stress management therapy and regular stress management?
Regular stress management focuses on practical tips like time management, boundaries, and relaxation techniques. Stress management therapy goes deeper, looking at why your nervous system stays activated and what patterns, sometimes rooted in earlier life experiences, are keeping you stuck in overdrive. We address the source, not just the symptoms.
I feel like everyone around me is just as stressed. Why should I get help?
The fact that chronic stress is normalized in central Alberta doesn't mean your body can handle it indefinitely. Other people being stressed doesn't make your symptoms less real. Getting help isn't a sign of weakness. It's a practical decision to protect your health and quality of life before things get worse.
Can chronic stress be related to trauma?
Yes. Sometimes what people describe as chronic stress is actually a nervous system that was wired for hypervigilance by earlier experiences. If your body can't downshift even when the external stressors ease up, unresolved trauma may be a factor. Recognizing this changes the treatment approach significantly.
I work long hours in a demanding job. Is it realistic to reduce my stress without changing my job?
Yes. While external changes can help, therapy focuses on how your nervous system and mind respond to demands. Many clients find that even without changing their work situation, they feel significantly less overwhelmed, sleep better, and handle pressure without the same physical toll.
How many sessions does stress management therapy usually take?
It varies. Some clients see meaningful improvement in 4 to 8 sessions. Others with deeper patterns or trauma-linked stress responses benefit from longer-term work. We'll talk about a realistic plan during your first few sessions and adjust as you progress.
